This explains that the Tathāgata gazed broadly upon the assembly, wishing to preach the Dharma for them. The statement that he used the eye of wisdom and not the physical eye is because the physical eye is obstructed and not penetrative, hence unable to gaze broadly; therefore he observed with the eye of wisdom. "From between his eyebrows, his thighs, flanks, waist, neck, shoulders, arms, and from the svastika emblem, from every single pore, he emitted rays of light": whenever the Tathāgata emits light, it always expresses a principle and is never arbitrary. In this assembly, light was emitted from the seven places including the space between the eyebrows; does this not symbolize the perfectly luminous Middle Way, free from the imagined and dependent natures, perfecting all virtues? At that time, the Indras, Brahmās, and devas in the sky saw from afar the Tathāgata seated upon the summit of Mount Laṅkā, which resembled Mount Meru, laughing aloud with joy. His laughter was not without reason.
