根本識種名壽，以能持識故，此種能令色心不斷，亦名命根。此識相分色法、身根，所得名煖，現行識名識。

The seeds of the fundamental consciousness are called longevity, because they can sustain the consciousness; since these seeds can maintain the continuity of form and mind, they are also called the life-faculty. The perceived division of this consciousness—material dharmas and the physical faculty—attains the name 'warmth'; the active consciousness is called 'consciousness.'
