'As for the contemplation of the reality of tathatā: one ponders that the nature of mind is without arising and without ceasing, not abiding in seeing, hearing, perceiving, or knowing, forever free from all thoughts of discrimination.' Therefore [the sūtra] says: 'Tathatā and vijñaptimātra are what all the noble ones practice.' Only when principle and practice are cultivated together as above is it called the method of contemplation. Hence Yongjia says: 'To cross the ocean one must first board a boat; without a boat there is no way to cross. To cultivate the mind one must enter contemplation; without contemplation there is no way to illuminate the mind. If the mind is not yet illuminated, on what day could it accord [with reality]?' If one could attain bodhi without cultivation and practice, then cats, rabbits, and the like should also realize it.
