This means that those non-Buddhists, seeing the destruction of the body and the end of life, when the six consciousnesses cannot grasp objective realms and the continuous consciousness of a single lifetime disperses following the conditions of the four great elements, falsely assert that the beginningless continuous consciousness ceases forever, and that there is no further continuity of karmic retribution taking rebirth; therefore, they are said to fall into annihilationism. Thus a verse below says: 'Although form and consciousness cease in turn, / Karma is not lost or destroyed; / Causing them across all existences, / Form and consciousness again continue.' If, with the sequential cessation of form and consciousness, all karma were lost and destroyed, then there would be no birth and death, nor permanence and impermanence, and both views of annihilationism and eternalism would also be completely abandoned. How could this be the same as the false annihilationist assertions of the non-Buddhists?
