佛言有四因緣眼識轉轉生也。一、謂不覺外塵是自心現而執取故；二、謂無始已來取著於色妄想熏習不斷故；三、謂識本性如是故，識以了別為自性故；四、謂樂欲見諸色相故。

The Buddha states that there are four causes and conditions by which the eye-consciousness arises in succession: First, not awakening to the fact that external dusts are the manifestations of one's own mind, and consequently grasping at them; second, the unceasing perfuming of false conceptualizations that have attached to form from beginningless time; third, the original nature of consciousness being like this, since consciousness has discernment as its own-nature; fourth, desiring and wishing to see the forms of various colours.
