外道建立初識有因，從冥諦而生。佛言此識初不從冥諦因生，其初識本無生，後眼色明念等為因，如幻生，一念不住故，生已有，有還滅。

Non-Buddhists superimpose a cause for the initial consciousness, asserting that it is produced from the primordial matter (pradhāna). The Buddha says that this consciousness is not initially produced from the cause of primordial matter; that initial consciousness is originally unproduced, and subsequently eye, form, light, attention, and so forth serve as causes, arising like an illusion; because not a single thought-moment abides, having arisen they exist, and having existed they perish again.
