4.118

為淨惑智二種障故，猶如商主引導商人，知道中通塞、過咎、止宿之處。而又善別種種諸寶，以譬如來引導眾生，斷除二障，令住無相法中安隱之處。而又善別諸乘差別地位之寶也。

It is in order to purify the two kinds of obstacles—afflictive and cognitive—just as a caravan leader guides merchants, knowing the open and blocked paths, faults, and resting places along the way, and also skillfully discerning various jewels. This illustrates the Tathāgata guiding sentient beings to sever the two obstacles, causing them to abide in the secure place within the signless Dharma, and also skillfully discerning the jewels of the different stages of the various vehicles.
