Speaking of those who cultivate the contemplative practices of the two vehicles, they comprehend the selflessness of persons and see that the aggregates, realms, and bases of self and others all have the characteristics of impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and impurity. Contemplating without abandoning this, they attain the first dhyāna, and gradually advancing to higher states, reach the samādhi of the cessation of ideation and feeling. Yet because they do not depart from characteristics, it is called the dhyāna practiced by the foolish.
