因上如來為眾生故,慈悲方便作種種異說,欲令眾生了名句中實義,莫著言說,故說名句文身。告諸菩薩,能觀此相達其義趣,疾得菩提,復能以是開覺眾生。是知法無言象、非離言象,若無言象而惑倒,執言象而迷真。故聖人利見垂象設教,豈徒然哉!

[The commentary says:] Because the Tathāgata previously employed compassionate skillful means to make various different statements for the sake of sentient beings, wishing to make sentient beings understand the true meaning within names and phrases and not cling to spoken words, he therefore spoke of the collections of names, phrases, and syllables. He told the bodhisattvas that those who can contemplate these characteristics and penetrate their purport will quickly attain bodhi and furthermore be able to use this to enlighten sentient beings. From this one knows that phenomena have neither words nor images, yet they are not apart from words and images. If there were no words and images, one would be deluded and inverted; if one clings to words and images, one is confused about the truth. Therefore, when the noble one appears beneficently, setting forth images and establishing teachings, how could it be in vain!
