Because it was said above that speech can reveal meaning, Mahāmati asks whether speech is the paramārtha-satya, or whether that which is spoken is the paramārtha-satya, and again brings forward the mind-dharma of the paramārtha to inquire. But the Buddha answers, saying: Words are not it, nor is that which is spoken. Why? The paramārtha is the realm of the bliss of samādhi realized inwardly by noble wisdom; one enters by means of words, but it is not words themselves. Therefore, speech is like a finger pointing at the moon; if one sees the moon, one thoroughly knows that what points to it is definitively not the moon.
