Because it was stated above that the ultimate truth (paramārtha-satya) is attained by noble wisdom personally realized and is not a realm of verbal discrimination, Mahāmati directly brings up the ultimate truth attained by noble wisdom personally realized to make his inquiry. However, because the essence of the ultimate truth is free from views of the four propositions—such as identity and difference, existence and non-existence, annihilation and permanence, both and neither—Mahāmati asks about the Dharma that is free from the four propositions. Here, three dharmas are spoken of to illuminate the four propositions, yielding twelve propositions; following the text there are nine, alternating between the implicit and the explicit. There are four propositions regarding identity and difference, three propositions regarding existence and non-existence, and two propositions regarding permanence and impermanence, because the compiler of the sūtra abbreviated them. This is fully explained as in the Treatises on the Four Tenets (Sizong lun).
