5.20

大慧因上愚夫分別妄法，生聲聞乘種性，然聲聞法中有四果差別，故舉四果差別以請問。行謂因行，須陀洹人所修因行，正欲趣向阿羅漢果。根有利鈍，故有差別之異。

Because fools above discriminate false phenomena and generate the lineage of the śrāvaka vehicle, and yet within the śrāvaka Dharma there are distinctions among the four fruits, Mahāmati therefore brought up the distinctions among the four fruits to inquire. "Practice" refers to causal practice; the causal practice cultivated by a srotāpanna is aimed directly at advancing toward the fruit of an arhat. Since faculties are sharp or dull, there are distinctions.
