5.241

Because of unknowing, craving arises from it, receiving the body of consciousness, name-and-form, and the six sense-bases; therefore ignorance is named the father of sentient beings. The 'village of the six places' is precisely the body of the six sense-bases. Through immediate wisdom permanently severing the roots of delusion and craving, it is called killing father and mother. Therefore the Vimalakīrti-nirdeśa says: "From delusion there is craving, and thus my sickness arose." This means that all afflictive fetters are born from this.
