This explains that except for the Buddhas, bodhisattvas, and great śrāvakas, who, seeing others commit deeds of immediate retribution, manifest the same deeds through supernormal transformations in order to encourage them and cause them to eliminate doubt and repent of their faults. For example, when King Ajātaśatru killed his father, foul sores broke out on his body; upon repenting, the Buddha instructed him to cultivate the contemplation of dharmatā, and once contemplated, the foul sores were immediately eradicated. This King Ajātaśatru was perhaps an illusory manifestation created by a sage. What benefit is there in manifesting this? It is the wish to encourage those who have actually committed the external deeds of immediate retribution to resolve to repent.
