Non-Buddhists conceptualize that the substantial essence of all phenomena exists, which is called "svabhāva", and later eliminate it as nonexistent, which is called "non-nature", taking the unmanifest principle (pradhāna) as nirvāṇa. Furthermore, they conceptualize that the characteristics of all phenomena exist, which is called "the nature of manifold characteristics", and later contemplate them as nonexistent, which is called "non-nature", taking the spiritual self (puruṣa) as nirvāṇa. Moreover, they generally conceptualize that both nature and characteristics exist, which is called "the nature of self-characteristics", and likewise later contemplate them as nonexistent, which is called "non-nature", taking false awareness as nirvāṇa. The above three kinds specifically present the views of non-Buddhists. Furthermore, severing the continuity in the five skandhas and the six destinies and taking the selflessness of persons as nirvāṇa is the nirvāṇa of the two vehicles. Because they perceive the five skandhas to exist, they are also like the non-Buddhists. Hence the *Śūraṅgama Sūtra* states that those śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas who fall into fixed natures all "deviate far from perfect penetration and turn their backs on the city of nirvāṇa."
