5.96

如海中波浪互相排引，亦展轉相生。色聲香味觸，是自心現境界風，吹動諸識念念起滅，亦復如是。故言意識滅時，餘七識亦滅。

Just as waves in the ocean mutually push and pull each other, they are also mutually generated. Visible forms, sounds, scents, tastes, and tangibles are the winds of the cognitive objects manifested by one's own mind, which blow upon and stir the consciousnesses to arise and cease from thought-moment to thought-moment in the same manner. Therefore it is said that when the manovijñāna ceases, the remaining seven consciousnesses also cease.
