The preceding section of the sūtra text recounted false conceptions; this directly clarifies the true meaning of all dharmas. Therefore it says that herein there are in reality no characteristics of dense or non-dense; if they were definitively existent, the great bodhisattvas would not be able to see that all dharmas are tranquil and free from discrimination. If non-Buddhists and ordinary beings could understand that what is seen by mind-only originally lacks external objects and all are equally signless, and observe in accord with this, they would see all dharmas of existence and non-existence as completely tranquil, and thus there would be no characteristics of dense bondage or non-dense bondage. However, not only is there originally no bondage, neither is there liberation; those who do not awaken to the true meaning of all dharmas falsely perceive bondage and liberation. Why is this? There is neither bondage nor liberation because all dharmas of existence and non-existence measured by ordinary sentiment or noble cognition are entirely false; seeking their actual substance, it cannot be found.
