Because it was stated above that attachments to all phenomena are profound and dense, countless in number, and that all are self-discriminated attachments of ordinary fools, with neither bondage nor liberation existing, Mahāmati intends to raise objections and examine the matter. Fearing a fall into nihilistic views, he first recapitulates the question. The words "As the World-Honoured One has said, that phenomena are discriminated by the manifold mind..." refer to the preceding text where the Buddha spoke of dense attachments to marks having countless varieties, all being the self-discriminations of ordinary fools, and so forth. "...not that phenomena have an intrinsic nature" recapitulates the Buddha's preceding statement that when one seeks the essential nature of all phenomena, it cannot be found. "This is merely false conceptualisation" recapitulates the Buddha's preceding statement that herein there is neither bondage nor liberation, and that only those who do not understand reality see bondage and liberation.
