Above, it generally refuted establishing a thesis. Here it tells the bodhisattva that one should explain that all phenomena have an essence like an illusion or a dream, their nature free from existence and non-existence. Because they appear like an illusion or dream, arising does not constitute arising; because an illusion or dream does not appear, non-arising does not constitute non-arising. This fulfills the point above that without establishing a thesis, one must not speak of arising or non-arising; hence it says 'like an illusion, like a dream, because they are seen and not seen.' However, because all phenomena are marks of delusive parikalpa, if one speaks of arising and non-arising, foolish ordinary beings will mostly fall into existence and non-existence, giving rise to fear; if one says they are like an illusion or like a dream, the two sentiments are naturally dispelled. This brings together the preceding statement that there is a real intrinsic nature, free from existence and free from non-existence; if one awakens and enters in this way, one accords with the Mahāyāna.
