This means that in the three realms, existence and non-existence, birth and death, and all phenomena are only provisional names and have no real referent. The foolish do not understand that the sage's expedient verbal teachings are provisional designations; hence, by discriminating, imagining, and conjecturing nominal marks and concrete characteristics, they take them to be truly existent, deluding and confusing their minds and consciousnesses. The sons of the Buddha, the bodhisattvas, are able to know that the Tathāgata's expedient spoken words cannot be conjectured, transcending the objective realm traversed by mundane cognition, without discrimination.
