Because foolish people cling to the finger of verbal exposition, they fail to attain the real meaning. Hence there are these two similes: first, the simile of clinging to the expression and forgetting the meaning; second, the simile of how one should realise the meaning and abandon the expression. Each corresponds to the Dharma as fully explained in the text. Therefore, it concludes with an exhortation that one ought to cultivate skilful means. Hence the Avataṃsaka says: "If one wishes to extinguish / Countless faults and evils, / One should, within the Buddha's Dharma, / Constantly strive with vigour." One must not vainly cling to nominal teachings, which is no different from looking at the tip of a finger.
