Among the nine entities, [Mahāmati] raises the single [entity of the] great elements to formulate a challenge to the Tathāgata, by which the rest may be inferred. That is to say, the four great elements also do not perish; they circulate through the seven destinies, their intrinsic nature is permanent, and they are non-arising and non-ceasing. Although the various phenomena spoken by the Tathāgata through differentiation differ slightly, in reality they are none other than what non-Buddhists have already spoken. If there is a difference, we pray you explain the reason; if there is no different meaning, then all non-Buddhists are precisely Tathāgatas. The World-Honoured One constantly says that it is impossible for multiple Buddhas to appear in a single world; but according to what was just said, then there should be, because what they say is no different from the Tathāgata.
