The coming together of false conditions fundamentally lacks intrinsic nature; though appearing and visible, it is not truly existent. Hence the treatise asks: "If all phenomena are not truly existent, how is it that they are clearly visible before us?" It answers: "Reflections in a mirror, the moon in water, the city of gandharvas, dream states, illusory events, a second moon, and so forth, are clearly visible; could they be real?" The Vijñaptimātratā also says: "Direct perception is like being in a dream; the seeing and what is seen do not coexist. At the time of seeing one does not discriminate; how can one call it direct perception?" "Wild horses" refers to mirages and floating vapors.
