Saying "how": once a great being said to a non-Buddhist, "How do your produced phenomena arise? Do they arise from having a cause, or do they arise from having no cause?" He answered, "They arise from having a cause." Saying "due to what cause": that is, since they arise from having a cause, he then asked, "Due to what cause?" He answered, "They arise from causes such as subtle atoms, prakṛti, and the four great elements." Saying "moreover, on account of what do they arise?": that is, he asked again, "On account of what do those great elements and so on arise?" He answered, "The four great elements and so on arise without a cause." Saying "where do they combine to formulate the doctrine of causelessness?": that is, if the four great elements and so on have no cause, then with no cause there are no phenomena; with no phenomena there is no place; with no place there is no combination; with no combination there is no arising—how then can you establish the doctrine that the four elements without a cause generate the various worlds? Mahāmati raises this to request the Buddha's determination once again.
