問：云何修道？答：推求十二因緣根本迺是無明，因無明故起煩惱業，因業故起果報而有諸苦，皆因無明為根本。如人伐樹，須先斷其根。

Question: How does one cultivate the path? Answer: Investigating the root of the twelve links of dependent origination, it turns out to be ignorance. Due to ignorance, afflictive karma arises; due to karma, retribution arises and there are all sufferings. All have ignorance as their root. Just as when a person fells a tree, he must first sever its root.
