The Buddha teaches that all phenomena arise in the three realms of existence because of the bad habit-energies of beginningless conceptual proliferation and karmic grasping. Foolish people do not realize that these are merely what is seen by the parikalpa of their own minds; they grasp at external phenomena, or as the heterodox say, that consciousness arises from the combination of an ātman, sense faculties, and objects. The Buddha is not like this; meaning that since he knows all phenomena are entirely false, one cannot speak of having a cause or lacking a cause. Only relying on the vikalpa of grasper and grasped in false thoughts is pratītyasamutpāda conventionally posited; originally there is no real substantial entity, which is something those who cling to an ātman cannot perceive. Furthermore, nirvāṇa and the like are also merely three in count; how much less could one speak of maker and non-maker?
