To state that the Buddha is permanent or impermanent both entails fault. Why does it entail fault? If the Tathāgata were permanent, he would be identical with the non-Buddhists who grasp at an ātman and so forth as a creator, positing a permanent creator. If he were impermanent, he would be identical with conditioned, fabricated phenomena of the mundane world, characterized by signs and their signifiers, ultimately decaying into nonexistence, and the Dharmakāya would be annihilated. Yet the Buddha, the Tathāgata, is truly free from annihilation and permanence.
