If one were to state that the Tathāgata is impermanent, that would entail the fault of being impermanent like jars, garments, and all created phenomena; the proper causes practiced—the adornments of merit and wisdom—would all be empty and futile. Yet the Buddha, the Tathāgata's merit flows across ten thousand generations and perpetually endures; his path penetrates a hundred million kalpas and remains ever firmer. Furthermore, all fabricated phenomena in the world would have to be the Tathāgata, because they would equally arise from created causes. Yet to assert that the Tathāgata is permanent or impermanent incurs the faults mentioned above, and therefore it cannot be expressed in words.
