This final verse of the passage is spoken by the Tathāgata in accordance with the capacities of the Hīnayāna. When the eye consciousness of sentient beings possesses the five kinds of conditions such as faculties and objects, it arises from the storehouse consciousness; however, all eight consciousnesses arise only by relying on conditions. One is cited to exemplify all the rest, which is why it speaks only of the eye consciousness. If considered according to the Mahāyāna meaning, among the eight consciousnesses, the single eye consciousness arises relying on nine conditions: namely, first, space; second, light; third, the faculty; fourth, the object; fifth, attention; sixth, the fundamental [consciousness]; seventh, defilement and purity; eighth, discrimination; ninth, seeds. The ear consciousness arises relying on only eight conditions, excluding light from the nine. For the nose, tongue, and body consciousnesses, each relies on seven conditions for the consciousness to operate, excluding space from the eight. The sixth mental consciousness arises depending on five conditions, excluding defilement-and-purity and discrimination from the seven. The seventh consciousness arises from four conditions, excluding the fundamental [consciousness] from the five—or it arises from three conditions, since faculty and object both belong to the eighth. The eighth consciousness arises from four conditions, excluding the fundamental from the five, because the seventh consciousness is its supporting faculty. If the immediately preceding condition is added, they arise respectively through ten, nine, eight, six, four, and five conditions. As a verse says: 'The eye consciousness arises from nine conditions, / the ear consciousness solely from eight, / the three of nose, tongue, and body from seven, / the latter three from five, three, and four; / if the immediately preceding [condition] is added, / each increases by one over the former.' Therefore, a verse in the Vijñaptimātratāsiddhi says: 'Supported by the fundamental consciousness, / the various consciousnesses manifest according to conditions; / either together or not together, / like waves relying on water. / The mental consciousness constantly arises, / except when born in the heaven without conceptualization, / in the two trances of mindlessness, / and during sleep and fainting.'
