The verse on the sands of the Ganges stated, 'Completely free from all faults.' Why then does the Tathāgata have these various faults? That is to say, when the Buddha first realized the path, the Māra of the sixth heaven mobilized four armies, bore instruments of torment, and approached beneath the tree to harass the Tathāgata; the brahmin woman Ciñcā tied a wooden bowl around herself to slander the Buddha; the non-Buddhist woman Sundarī was murdered to slander the Buddha; furthermore, the Buddha once begged for food all around and received nothing, returning with an empty bowl. 'And so on' refers to the rest that cannot be fully enumerated, such as eating horse barley, pain in both head and back, Devadatta's betrayal, King Ajātaśatru's rebellious harm, a splinter injuring his foot, the setting of a fire pit, poisoned food, and such matters.
