1.22

This is the fulfillment of place. The true body has nowhere it is, yet nowhere it is not; hence this is distinguished next. "On the summit of Mount Malaya by the shore of the great ocean" indicates in general the place of preaching. This mountain is in the midst of the great ocean, five hundred yojanas high; unless by the power of supernormal travel, none can reach it. "Laṅkā" particularly designates the site of preaching; here rendered "difficult to go to." Its meaning was seen in the preceding title. As for "within," the Buddha delights in the Middle Way: ascending to the central heaven, descending to the central kingdom, and entering extinction at midnight all express the Middle Way. Now abiding within the city to teach the Dharma of self-realization is the meaning of the Middle Way.
