Question: Since persons and phenomena are empty and tranquil, and the two obstacles are fundamentally non-existent, how does the Tathāgata give rise to great compassion? Answer: Sentient beings do not know this principle, and therefore, deluded and inverted, they cycle without end. Now, causing sentient beings to awaken to and enter this Dharma is what constitutes truly giving rise to great compassion. Hence the *Vimalakīrti* says, 'One should speak such Dharma for sentient beings.' This is true loving-kindness.
