From the line above stating 'wealth, grain, gold, and silver, / fields, houses, and servants and maids' down to this point, there are fourteen verses in total. The Buddha admonishes his disciples not to inadvertently violate the precept of restraint without cause, for only then can they accomplish the precept of gathering wholesome dharmas and the precept of benefiting sentient beings, give rise to samādhi, develop wisdom, and be endowed with all Buddha-dharmas. From this we know that the precepts are the foundation of samādhi and wisdom; one cannot be without this master for even a single day. The ancient masters used the metaphor of a multi-storied pavilion, where the upper levels endure only when the lower level is solid—how fitting!
