The wondrous nature of tathatā is originally unarisen; when a single thought accords with conditions, events divide into beginning and end. This is precisely the true mind not preserving its own nature, according with the condition of avidyā to form the consciousnesses: arising, abiding, changing, and ceasing. This cannot be known by the intellect of ordinary persons, Hīnayānists, or bodhisattvas on causal stages. Hence the treatise says: "Consciousness arisen based on the perfuming of avidyā cannot be perceived by the wisdom of ordinary persons or the two vehicles; even bodhisattvas in the ultimate stage cannot completely know it; only the Buddha fully fathoms it."
