"Inferior, middling, and superior cultivation" refers to following each person's capacity. "The stream of discrimination" refers to the above two kinds of arising, abiding, and ceasing. The remaining meaning is as in the text. That "all should draw close to good spiritual friends": as Aśvaghoṣa said, "The dharmas of all Buddhas have primary causes and contributory conditions; only when causes and conditions are complete can they be accomplished. Like the nature of fire within wood, which is the primary cause of fire: if no person knows it and does not employ expedients, that it could burn the wood of itself is impossible." Sentient beings are also like this: although they have the perfuming power of the primary cause, if they do not encounter Buddhas, bodhisattvas, and spiritual friends who show, teach, benefit, gladden, and compassionately gather and protect them as a condition, that they could of themselves sever afflictions and enter nirvāṇa is impossible.
