2.212
This verse clarifies that the ocean of the aforementioned manifesting consciousness is by nature eternally abiding, yet is stirred and moved by the wind of those six dust-realms. For these seven kinds of consciousness, the substance of the manifesting consciousness serves as their internal cause, and the realms of the six dusts serve as their external conditions, causing the six kinds of coarse and heavy characteristics to flourish. Therefore it is said: "Just as the waves of the great ocean / Arise due to this fierce wind, / Billowing surges churning the deep abyss / Without any time of cessation, / The ocean of the storehouse consciousness is eternally abiding. / Moved by the wind of external objects, / The waves of the various consciousnesses / Leap up and arise in evolution."
