2.215

From what place do these seven consciousnesses come to enter into the storehouse consciousness, forming the number of seven, flowing and stirring without any time of cessation? These seven evolving consciousnesses do not come from within, do not come from without, and do not come from in between; it is merely that the substance of the storehouse consciousness transforms to become the seven consciousnesses. Just as ocean water moves to make waves, therefore it is said: "Just as ocean water moves / And various waves evolve, / The storehouse consciousness is also like this: / The various consciousnesses arise. / Mind, intellect, and mental consciousness / Are taught for the sake of characteristics."
