The various consciousnesses are fundamentally quiescent, and the delusive dusts lack substance. Because of non-awakening, the first five consciousnesses evolve, apprehending the present dusty sense-objects. The sixth conceptualizes, giving rise to delusions and generating karma. The seventh conveys and transmits, grasping at ātman and ātmīya, able to accumulate extensively. Together they act as perfumers of the eighth storehouse consciousness, which receives the perfuming and maintains the bījas, accumulating without losing [them]. Mutually serving as causes, they cycle without cease. Therefore it says: 'The mind can accumulate karma, the manas can accumulate extensively, because of discrimination it is called consciousness, and with respect to present objects five are spoken of.'
