This means that if, upon hearing the dharmas of pratītyasamutpāda explained, they know that the substance of conditions is empty and are free from defiled attachment; or if at times they hear of manifesting various bodies, or uniting multiple bodies into one body, or separating one body into multiple bodies, and regarding spiritual penetrations and transformations they faithfully accept them without contradiction and joyfully cultivate them, this is called the lineage of the pratyekabuddha vehicle. However, there are two distinct kinds: first, those who meet a Buddha expounding the dharma of the twelvefold causal conditions and rely upon it to practice, called pratyekabuddhas, which is as just stated; second, those who appear in an era without a Buddha and observe conditions to awaken by themselves, called pratyekajinas.
