3.133

As for parikalpitasvabhāva, it refers to foolish ordinary people who, through parikalpa and conceptualization, grasp the skandhas, dhātus, and āyatanas as a real ātman and real dharmas; this is named parikalpitasvabhāva. This has two aspects: first, svabhāva, which is universally grasping that all dharmas have a real svabhāva; second, difference, which is distinctly grasping permanence, impermanence, and so forth as possessing a real substance of their own. Or, based on names, they falsely construct referents; or, based on referents, they falsely construct names, and so forth. In terms of substance, it does not exceed the two substances of person and phenomena; in terms of grasping, it does not exceed the two graspings of name and referent. It is also said that the defiled mind of sentient beings has two kinds of parikalpitasvabhāva within paratantrasvabhāva: first, following awareness, which is the active grasping; second, the anuśaya of habitual tendencies through repeated practice, which is the seed of grasping.
