This states that what the Tathāgata teaches is not identical with the ātman of non-Buddhists. Non-Buddhists speak of the self as being like a sesame seed, a grain of barley, or a thumb, establishing its fixed characteristics. The Buddha speaks of the tathāgatagarbha, sometimes naming it emptiness, sometimes the limit of reality (bhūta-koṭi), down to wishlessness. Thus its substance is one, its names differ according to the circumstances, and it is not identical with the ātman spoken of by non-Buddhists. Because fools are terrified of selflessness, the Tathāgata expediently speaks of the realm of non-existence to make the gateway of the tathāgatagarbha, urging the bodhisattvas that they should not grasp a self here in the manner of non-Buddhists.
