Fourth, analyzing the superiority and inferiority of the views and understandings of the foolish and the wise to clarify right cognition. Not knowing that the characteristics of distinction between birth-and-death and nirvāṇa exist only through false discrimination: that is, nirvāṇa is spoken of in contrast to birth-and-death, just as medicine is spoken of in contrast to illness. When one realizes that birth-and-death is non-existent, the nirvāṇa contrasted with it is also unobtainable. Therefore the Viśeṣacinti-brahma-paripṛcchā Sūtra states: "The Buddhas appear in the world not to cause sentient beings to emerge from birth-and-death and enter nirvāṇa, but only to deliver them from the two views of birth-and-death and nirvāṇa." Since false discrimination lacks intrinsic nature, it is precisely nirvāṇa.
