Regarding the two obstacles of affliction and cognition: as the Awakening of Faith says, 'The six defiled minds are called the obstacle of affliction, because they can obstruct the fundamental wisdom of suchness. The meaning of ignorance is called the obstacle of cognition, because it can obstruct the worldly spontaneous karma-wisdom.' What does this mean? Because relying on the defiled mind there is the capacity to see and manifest, falsely grasping at realms and contradicting the nature of equality. Because all dharmas are eternally tranquil, without characteristics of arising, yet ignorance in its unawareness falsely contradicts dharmas, one cannot obtain various knowledges that accord with all worldly realms. This explains the meaning of the two obstacles based on the mutual reliance of root and branches. If explaining the two obstacles based on the two attachments, it will be explained later by citing the Cheng weishi lun.
