The Tathāgata said: "The cessation of discriminating consciousness is called nirvāṇa." Mahāmati doubted that this differed from the previous explanation, so he asked: "Do you not establish eight kinds of consciousness? Why then do you speak solely of the cessation of the consciousness of jñeya, and not of the cessation of all remaining seven consciousnesses?" The Buddha told Mahāmati: "Because that manovijñāna pervades the three natures, gives rise to afflictions, and creates karma, serving as the cause for all the consciousnesses and conditioning external objects, the remaining seven kinds of consciousness arise in dependence upon it. If the manovijñāna ceases, then the remaining consciousnesses will not arise."
