Just as the nature of gold, silver, and the like is originally existent of itself, and does not begin to exist only when a metalsmith melts them; this serves as an analogy showing that the fundamentally abiding nature of phenomena is originally existent of itself, and does not begin to exist only when the Tathāgata proclaims it. If a Tathāgata appears in the world and proclaims it, the dharma-realm does not thereby increase; if a Buddha does not appear and there is no proclamation, the dharma-realm does not thereby decrease. This means that the abiding of dharmas and the realm of dharmas are all permanently abiding, not dependent on speech.
