Because of the above, awakening to dharmas such as the two kinds of selflessness is called 'Buddha'. The past Buddhas had already awakened to this Dharma and were therefore called 'Buddhas', by virtue of being in the past; the World-Honoured One now has awakened to this Dharma, and is likewise called 'Buddha'. Although the path of awakening is one, past and present differ; why then say, 'I am all past Buddhas'? Moreover, according to the Jātaka sūtras, it is said that the Tathāgata underwent various births in the past, such as being King Mūrdhagata, the elephant king, the bird king, the ṛṣis Candraprabha and Sunetra, and so on for hundreds of thousands of lifetimes. Yet it is also said: 'I am all past Buddhas.' Bringing up the contradiction between the two statements, he makes this request to the Tathāgata.
