This explains that if the sense faculties of craving and grasping cease, not continuing to produce their own evil coarse and subtle thoughts distinguishing painful and pleasant feelings, those who practice such a path may attain the cessation absorption or the four dhyānas, entering the liberation of the four noble truths, and then falsely produce the notion of having attained true liberation. Therefore the Lotus Sūtra says that "merely exhausting saṃsāra" is called liberation, but in truth they have not yet attained universal liberation. From here upward, it explains the tathāgatagarbha as the cause of the inferior uncontaminated wholesome dharmas of the supramundane śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas.
