Seventh, cultivation and realization: They are practiced throughout the five stages, and are only fully perfected when one is a Buddha. With respect to the causal stages, the six generally have three designations: in the first immeasurable eon, the power of giving and the rest is still weak and is overcome by afflictions, so it is merely termed 'pāramitā'; from the second eon onward, their power gradually increases and can overcome afflictions, so it is termed 'near-pāramitā' (upapāramitā); in the third asaṃkhyeya, their power becomes exceedingly superior and can ultimately subdue all afflictions, so it is termed 'great pāramitā' (paramārthapāramitā). Hence the sūtra states, 'supramundane supreme pāramitās.'
