This states that when a bodhisattva of the eighth stage first attains the forbearance of the unarisen dharmas, they perceive all phenomena as like illusions and dreams, and the false imaginations of cittamatra subside. The buddhas, with seven kinds of exhortation, keep them at the gate of samādhi so they do not enter nirvāṇa; if they did not receive this exhortation and encouragement, they would not cultivate the vast practices and vows to transform sentient beings with compassion, and like śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas, they would sever the Buddha-lineage. Therefore, the Tathāgata reveals immeasurable, inconceivable merits to them, causing them to fulfill and achieve the ocean of the Buddha fruit, without falling into the two vehicles and giving rise to the notion of nirvāṇa in the unarisen samādhi. However, when this chapter speaks of śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas, it refers to former bodhisattvas who retreated from the bodhi vow. Those of the two vehicles with fixed natures who tend toward quietude cannot even know the dharmas of the first stage, so how could they share with an eighth-stage bodhisattva the attainment of the forbearance of the unarisen?
