The Tathāgata expounds the Dharma through expedient means in accordance with sentient beings' dispositions, and thus there are the various vehicles; in the ultimate truth (paramārtha-satya), what sequence could there be? Therefore the Viśeṣacintibrahma-paripṛcchā Sūtra states: "One who attains the true nature of all phenomena does not proceed from one stage to another stage." Thus we know that when the provisional is illuminated by the real, the characteristics of expedient means are exhausted, and neither exists at all.
